Having now been back to the school for a second visit - and actually having stood
inside the classroom, I am now certain that this was my 2BG formroom in 1958/59. I have definite memories of standing chatting by the railings at the top of the stairs waiting for the afternoon class to start.
The only lesson I can remember taking for certain in this room, was second year
Latin with Miss Yule. At the risk of serious understatement, Latin was not one of my best subjects. I remember one time drifting off into a daydream during her class and without realising what I was doing, covering the front of my Latin homework book with elaborate graffiti. You can imagine my horror when I "came to" and realised what I'd done! Short of claiming that someone had stolen my homework (and no one would believe that) I had no option but to hand my work in at the end of the lesson for marking. On the cover she wrote something like: "Marks 8/10 for artistic imagination, pity your Latin shows the same level of invention - see me". To make matters worse I had to pay a shilling for a new exercise book.
On the subject of graffiti; in my first year Latin class one of my classmates (can't
recall his name) drew a small Russian sputnik (very topical in late 1957) on the back of his exercise book. Despite being very tiny it was inevitably spotted by eagle eyed Mr. Watson-Liddell, who rather than giving him the expected punishment of 1000 lines, "I must not draw on my exercise book", instead made him do drawings of 1000 different satellites.
