In the late 50's the school buses used to be numbered from one upwards. For some unaccountable
reason I was extremely proud of the fact that my school bus was number one. The number one did it's first pick-up at Madliena, then Saint Patrick's (my stop 1960), then Saint Andrew's and finally Paceville (my stop 1957-1959). From that point on it was non stop to Tal Handaq.
[Having done the trip so many times you'd have thought I could drive to the school with my eyes
shut. Not a bit of it - took me over an hour from Sliema!]
There was a boy on our bus who could play the chromatic harmonica by ear (no pun intended).
With very little encouragement he would entertain us with his (I always thought excellent) renditions of late 50's classics like "Diana", "You are my Destiny" and of course "Oh Carol". |
