I'm sure these were tennis courts (or was it netball?) back in the late 50's. I particularly remember
playing a variation of the ball game "Kingy" standing on that wall. For those of you that might not remember the game, it involved all but one player (with usually about 20 kids playing) standing on the wall facing out. One player standing about where this photo was taken (or nearer) would throw a hard rubber ball at the kids on the wall. The kids on the wall had to remain "frozen" while the ball was in the hand of the thrower. If you were hit you joined the throwers. Last kid on the wall won.
I remember hitting a boy in the legs one time. I had thrown the ball from quite close in with as much
power as I could possibly manage. It really stung - and boy was he mad! He chose to be first thrower in the next game and the whole thing became a two person game - with him ignoring all the other kids on the wall and just trying to hit me. He never did hit me - but if looks could kill....
I could be wrong but I seem to remember hard packed, sandy soil rather than tarmac?
